1. Mount Philo summit ledge
At 968 feet, Mount Philo rises abruptly out of the flat Champlain Valley floor, which is exactly why it takes the top spot. Reach it by the 1.5-mile paved toll road or the one-mile trail.
The open cliff-top summit has picnic tables, pine trees and a panoramic westward view over farmland, Lake Champlain and the entire Adirondack range. The paved road means you can carry lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic to the top, and the unobstructed 180-degree scope covers the central valley. 2 to 4: the Burlington lakeshore and an alpine ridge
Burlington Waterfront Park is the quintessential accessible Vermont sunset at water level: sit on the wooden swings along the boardwalk, on the grassy lawn, or with a drink on the top deck of the Community Boathouse as sailboats cross the glowing harbour. Easy parking, walkable from Church Street.
Sunset Ridge on Mount Mansfield is the opposite: a strenuous 4.6-mile round-trip hike from Underhill State Park to exposed granite ledges at 3,800 to 4,395 feet. Note the safety implication — you will be descending in complete darkness, so pack a reliable headlamp with spare batteries, warm windproof layers for the post-dark temperature plunge, and sturdy boots.
Lone Rock Point is a secluded rocky limestone peninsula north of North Beach, a fifteen-minute walk from the Rock Point Center parking area. Sheer cliffs drop straight into deep water, making it the quiet, romantic option; access requires registering online.
5 to 8: drive-ups, causeways and stone circles
Overlook Park in South Burlington is a popular local pull-off on a bluff above the bay at 340 feet, directly off Route 7 near Spear Street — perfect for a quick view with no hike and no park fee. Just park and watch from the grassy ridge.
The Colchester Causeway spit puts you surrounded by water on both sides: park at Airport Park in Colchester and walk or bike 1.5 miles out onto the marble railway bed, where the sunset reflects off open water in every direction.
Mount Equinox Skyline Drive in Manchester climbs a 5.2-mile paved private toll road to 3,848 feet, the highest Taconic peak accessible by car, with views from the summit centre reaching into New York, Massachusetts and the Green Mountains.
Oakledge Park at the southern end of the Burlington bike path is home to the Earthclock — a 42-foot circle of fourteen granite monoliths configured as a working sundial. Sit on the rocky beach ledges or inside the stone circle as golden hour hits the water.
