Shire Riverview ($220-$350) is the mid-budget pick with river views. 506 On The River Inn is family-friendly. For eating: Worthy Kitchen for craft beer and comfort food, Angkor Wat Restaurant for surprising Cambodian, Mon Vert Café for breakfast, Cloudland Farm for a real farm-to-table experience (Saturday dinners only, reserve 8 weeks ahead).
The must-dos
Billings Farm & Museum ($16 adult) — a working dairy plus 1890s history. Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park (free) for the mansion and forest trails. Sugarbush Farm for cheese and syrup tasting. Quechee Gorge is 6 minutes away — Vermont’s deepest gorge, 30 minutes gets you the walking loop. Skip the touristy 'Woodstock trolley' — the village is walkable in 15 minutes.

Is Woodstock too twee?+
A little. It’s polished for tourism. But the surrounding countryside is genuinely rural and the village architecture is real.
How does it compare to Manchester?+
Woodstock is smaller, prettier, more historic. Manchester has better shopping (outlets), more dining, and better skiing access. Woodstock wins for a 2-night couples trip.
