The clear winners
October (foliage, harvest, cool crisp days — the busiest month, book early). Late September if you want foliage without full crowds. July and August for lakes, hiking, farmer’s markets. Mid-January through early March for reliable skiing and empty inns mid-week. February is my favorite ski month — cold, snowy, no April slush.
The nuanced months
March is sugaring season and the best time to visit a sugarhouse. Late March skiing can be excellent if it’s snowed. May greens up in a rush after mid-month. June has long days, wildflowers, and no crowds — underrated. September before the 20th is the quiet warm secret. November after foliage but before snow is 'stick season' — brown, cheap, quiet.
The ones to skip
April is mud season — dirt roads impassable, most inns closed for maintenance, ski hills done. Early November same energy but colder. Christmas week is expensive and crowded but magical if you commit. Presidents' week is the peak ski crowd — go the week before or after.
Good to know
Cheapest week of the year?+
The second week of November and the last week of April — many properties close for maintenance, and those that don’t slash rates.
Best week overall?+
October 5-12 in a normal year. Foliage peaks, weather still mild, farm stands open, and everything’s still operating before the November shutdown.
