The overhyped attractions
Ben & Jerry’s factory tour — 30-minute line for a 15-minute video and a tiny sample. Skip it and go directly to their scoop shop instead, or drive 5 minutes to Cold Hollow Cider Mill for way better donuts and cider. Vermont Country Store in Weston — Instagram-perfect but truly a gift shop; the Grafton Village Store is more authentic. Church Street Marketplace on a summer Saturday — jammed and mostly national chains now.
The 'famous' foods that don’t deliver
Any 'Vermont-branded' maple candy sold at highway rest stops — buy at farms instead. Restaurant maple creemees at $9 — get one at a farm stand for $5. Cabot Cheddar in a supermarket-style visitor center — go to Jasper Hill or Grafton instead. Cheap 'Vermont cheddar' packs at gift shops — real Vermont cheddar costs $18-$28/lb, not $6.
What’s underrated instead
The Northeast Kingdom (Lake Willoughby, Burke, Craftsbury) has 90% of Vermont’s beauty and 10% of the tourists. Middlebury is a better foodie stop than most guides admit. The Rutland Farmers' Market (Saturdays) beats Burlington’s for actual local produce. Weekday visits everywhere. And any Vermont town not in a guidebook.
Good to know
What’s the single most overrated Vermont experience?+
The Ben & Jerry’s factory tour. It’s fine, but never worth a 45-minute wait.
What surprises visitors most?+
How rural it really is. Outside Burlington and a few resort towns, gas stations close at 8pm and cell service disappears in the mountains.
