The Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium
The family’s philanthropy built the Fairbanks Museum, a barrel-vaulted Victorian hall crammed with natural-history curiosities, taxidermy and oddities, and home to Vermont’s only public planetarium — a wonderfully old-fashioned cabinet of wonders.
The Athenaeum & Dog Mountain
The St. Johnsbury Athenaeum, an 1871 National Historic Landmark, pairs a gaslit-era library with an art gallery built around Albert Bierstadt’s monumental 'Domes of the Yosemite'. On a hill above town, the late Stephen Huneck’s Dog Mountain offers trails and the beloved Dog Chapel, welcoming all visitors and their dogs.
A walkable Main Street
St. Johnsbury’s Main and Railroad Streets, lined with Lambert Packard’s grand architecture, hold cafes, Catamount Arts and the eastern terminus of the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail — an easy, characterful town to explore on foot.
