The fifth season
Locals live a season tourists never see — Mud Season (late March to May), when thawing dirt roads turn to deep muck. AWD or 4WD with clearance and winter tires is not a luxury; it is a necessity.
Heat & community
Winters run sub-zero from December to March, heated by oil, propane, pellet and wood stoves — stacking cordwood is a late-summer ritual. Governance is hyper-local: on Town Meeting Day each March, residents vote budgets directly in school gyms, and honor-system farm stands run on trust.
Chittenden — Burlington; jobs, culture, lakefront.
Central Vermont — Stowe, Waterbury; skiing and food.
Southern Vermont — Woodstock, Manchester; inns and antiques.
Northeast Kingdom — St. Johnsbury, Newport; cheap land and solitude.
