The must-drive routes
Route 100 through Waitsfield-Warren-Rochester is famous for a reason but bumper-to-bumper on peak weekends. Do it Tuesday-Thursday. The Molly Stark Trail (Route 9, Brattleboro to Bennington) is 40 miles of quieter beauty. Smugglers' Notch (Route 108, closed to trucks) between Stowe and Jeffersonville is the most dramatic 8 miles of driving in the state. The Northeast Kingdom loop via Route 114 through Burke and Island Pond gets you real remote color without the crowds.
Timing and traffic tactics
Peak varies by elevation and latitude: higher elevations peak late September, valleys peak October 8-18, southern Vermont often peaks a week later than the north. Check the state’s foliage report (updated Wednesdays). Drive Sunday afternoon to Thursday if possible — leaf-peeper Saturday traffic through Woodstock is genuinely horrible from 10am-4pm. Book lodging 6+ months ahead for foliage weekends or plan a mid-week trip.
Good to know
When is peak color?+
For the majority of the state, October 8-15. Elevation matters — Killington summit peaks late September, Bennington valleys can hold color into late October.
Which town has the best village-plus-foliage combo?+
Woodstock, hands down. Weston and Grafton are close seconds and less crowded.
