Staying in Ludlow
Ludlow is a real working town in the Black River valley rather than a purpose-built resort village, and VT-103 and VT-100 meet in the middle of it. Getting there and around
VT-103 and VT-100 cross in Ludlow; most people come in from I-91 exit 6 at Rockingham and drive about 35 minutes west, or down from Rutland in roughly the same time. Amtrak’s Vermonter stops at Bellows Falls to the east and the Ethan Allen serves Rutland to the north, but neither is walkable to anything here. Burlington International (BTV) is about two hours away, and you need a car unless you are staying within walking distance of the base area. By road it is roughly two and a half hours from Boston and around four and a half from New York City, which is why it fills on winter weekends.
When to go
Okemo runs lift-served activity in the warm months, there is golf in the valley, and Lake Rescue, Echo Lake and Lake Ninevah are all within a short drive for swimming and paddling. VT-100 north through Plymouth is one of the better foliage drives in the state. Winter weekends fill the slopeside addresses fastest, and the drive from Boston or New York is easier if you leave early on Friday or late on Sunday.
