Where to stay in Ludlow
The village core along Main Street and Depot Street is the whole reason to choose Ludlow over a purpose-built resort: you can walk between dinner, a drink and your bed, and the lift base is a shuttle ride or a five-minute drive away. Staying up on the mountain access road or over on the Jackson Gore side buys slopeside convenience and quiet at the cost of driving down for everything else. For more space and lower prices, look north on VT-100 toward Plymouth and the lakes, or east on VT-103 through Proctorsville and Cavendish, both ten to fifteen minutes out. It is the winter holiday weeks and the Friday-night arrivals from Boston that fill the town, so book those far ahead and expect midweek to be calm.

- Ski or ride OkemoThe mountain starts at the edge of town and climbs over 2,000 vertical feet, with a second base area at Jackson Gore. It has a long-standing reputation for immaculate grooming and being an easy mountain to learn on.
- Walk Main Street and the Black RiverLudlow is a working mill town rather than a purpose-built resort village, and the brick blocks along Main Street show it. The Black River runs behind them, and the rebuilding work since the 2023 flood is still visible along the water.
- Visit Plymouth NotchFifteen minutes north on VT-100, the Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site preserves the entire hill village where Coolidge was born and where his father swore him in as president by lamplight in 1923. The cheese factory his family started still makes granular curd cheese on site.
- Cool off at Buttermilk FallsA short drive from downtown on Buttermilk Falls Road, a series of cascades and pools on Branch Brook that locals have used as a swimming hole for generations. Park considerately, because the access is tight.
- Hike the Healdville TrailFrom the Mount Holly side of the mountain, a steady climb of roughly three miles each way ends at the fire tower on Okemo’s summit and a view over the Black River valley. It is the classic non-lift way up.
- Day-trip to WestonAbout twenty minutes north on VT-100, Weston holds the original Vermont Country Store and the Weston Playhouse, which has run professional summer theatre on the village green for decades. A good rainy-afternoon plan.
Getting around & the essentials
Transport
VT-103 and VT-100 cross in Ludlow; most people come in from I-91 exit 6 at Rockingham and drive about 35 minutes west, or down from Rutland in roughly the same time. Amtrak’s Vermonter stops at Bellows Falls to the east and the Ethan Allen serves Rutland to the north, but neither is walkable to anything here. Burlington International (BTV) is about two hours away, and you need a car unless you are staying within walking distance of the base area.

Has Ludlow recovered from the 2023 floods?
Largely, yes. The July 2023 storm put the Black River through downtown and damaged businesses and homes badly, and the town has spent the years since rebuilding. Most of Main Street is trading again, but a few individual places never reopened, so check before you count on a particular restaurant.
Is Ludlow cheaper than Stowe or Manchester?
Generally yes. It is a real town rather than a resort village, so lodging and eating out tend to run below the marquee Vermont destinations, especially midweek and outside holiday periods.
Is there anything to do here in summer?
Okemo runs lift-served activity in the warm months, there is golf in the valley, and Lake Rescue, Echo Lake and Lake Ninevah are all within a short drive for swimming and paddling. VT-100 north through Plymouth is one of the better foliage drives in the state.
How far is Ludlow from Boston or New York?
Roughly two and a half hours from Boston and around four and a half from New York City by road, which is why it fills on winter weekends. Leaving early on Friday or late on Sunday makes a real difference to the drive.
