Staying in Stowe
Stowe is a New England village of about 200 years standing, set in a high mountain valley with the Green Mountains to the west and the Worcester Range to the east. Mount Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak at 4,395 feet, rises at the northern end of the valley, with Spruce Peak at 3,339 feet opposite and Smugglers' Notch beyond. Plan your stay
Getting there and around
Stowe sits on VT-100 about ten miles north of Waterbury and I-89 exit 10, roughly 40 minutes from Burlington International (BTV) and around three and a half hours from Boston. Amtrak's Vermonter stops in Waterbury, the closest you will get by rail, but you still need a car or taxi for the last stretch. A car is strongly recommended, though in winter a seasonal shuttle runs the Mountain Road corridor between the village and the mountain.
When to go
Foliage in late September and early October is the busiest and priciest window, though it is often the better trip than winter. Summer brings hiking on Mansfield and the Long Trail, swimming holes on the Little River, and rooms at a fraction of February rates. The genuine quiet stretches are April mud season and early November. Winter draws the ski crowd; midweek stays, early December and the stretch after the leaves drop are the reliable ways to pay less.
