Where is the best base for exploring the county?
Woodstock is the postcard choice and the priciest; White River Junction is cheaper, sits at the I-89 and I-91 crossroads, and has a real arts and restaurant scene of its own. Ludlow makes sense if skiing at Okemo is the main purpose, and the Connecticut River villages suit a slower trip.
How busy does it get in foliage season?
Woodstock and Quechee are among the most visited places in Vermont in the first three weeks of October, and rooms in the village sell out months ahead at peak rates. Staying a few towns out along the river or on VT-100 and driving in is the usual workaround.
Is Windsor County good for skiing?
Yes. Okemo at Ludlow is the big one, family-focused with a lot of grooming, and Ascutney and Suicide Six near Woodstock are small local hills. Killington is just over the line in Rutland County, half an hour west of Woodstock on US-4.
Can I visit without a car?
Partly. Amtrak's Vermonter stops at White River Junction and Windsor, and you can walk White River Junction and reach a few places by regional bus, but the county is large and rural. Anything involving Woodstock, Plymouth Notch or the back roads really needs a car.
