Getting there and around
US-2 is the spine of the county, leaving I-89 at Milton and crossing the Sand Bar causeway into South Hero before running north through Grand Isle, North Hero and Alburgh, where VT-78 links east to Swanton. Burlington International (BTV) is about 30 to 45 minutes from most of the islands, and a car ferry crosses year round between Grand Isle and Plattsburgh, New York. A car is necessary, though the flat terrain makes the islands unusually good for cycling once you are here.
When to go
Late spring and early autumn are lovely and much emptier, with good light over the water and the Adirondacks across it. The county has Vermont's longest growing season, so the orchards and farms around the islands are at their best in the warmer months. Winter is stark: many seasonal businesses close, though ice fishing shanties appear on the bays in a cold year.
