Where to stay in Stratton
The base village at the top of the access road is the whole argument for staying here: you park once, walk to the gondola, the ski school and the restaurants, and never touch the car again until you leave. That convenience is what you pay for, and it is at its steepest over Christmas, Presidents' Week and any Saturday in January or February, when the New York and Connecticut drive arrives en masse. Down at the bottom of the access road, Bondville and the surrounding Winhall back roads cost less for a five to ten minute drive up, and Londonderry and Peru along VT-11 spread you between Stratton and Bromley. If you want shops, a proper choice of dinner and a town that exists independently of the mountain, Manchester is thirty to forty minutes west on VT-30 and VT-11 and is the sensible base for a mixed trip.

- Ski the mountain from the villageStratton’s summit is the highest in southern Vermont at about 3,875 feet, and the gondola loads right at the base village so you can walk from your room to the lift. The terrain is wide and well groomed, which is exactly why families keep coming back.
- Climb to the Stratton fire towerThe Appalachian and Long trails cross the summit, where a fire tower gives a full circle of southern Vermont, and it was on this mountain that Benton MacKaye is said to have conceived the Appalachian Trail. You can hike up from the Kelley Stand Road or ride the gondola and walk the ridge in summer.
- Walk in to Stratton Pond or Grout PondStratton Pond, reached on foot from the Long Trail, is one of the largest bodies of water on the trail in Vermont and a classic overnight for backpackers. Grout Pond, off the Kelley Stand Road, is easier to reach and good for a paddle or a quiet afternoon.
- Spend a day in ManchesterAbout half an hour west on VT-30 and VT-11, Manchester has the designer outlets, Hildene, and a strip of restaurants and bookshops that make a good bad-weather day. It is where most Stratton visitors go when they want something other than resort food.

Stratton is reached from the Stratton Mountain access road off VT-30 at Bondville, with VT-11 and VT-30 connecting west to Manchester and east toward Brattleboro. The practical airports are Albany (ALB) about two hours west and Hartford’s Bradley (BDL) roughly two and a half hours south, and Amtrak’s Vermonter stops in Brattleboro about an hour away. Most visitors drive up from New York or Connecticut; a car is needed to get here even though you can leave it parked once you are in the village.

Do I need a car if I stay in the base village?
Not if you intend to ski and eat on the mountain, since the village is pedestrian and everything is within a short walk of the gondola. You will want one to reach Manchester, the West River valley or any restaurant off the hill, and to get here in the first place.
Is Stratton good for families and beginners?
It is one of the more family-oriented resorts in Vermont, with a large ski school, gentle lower-mountain terrain and childcare on site. The trade-off is that expert skiers may find it tamer than Killington or Jay.
What is Stratton like in summer?
Much quieter, and pleasant for it. Golf, tennis, the gondola for hikers and the surrounding Green Mountain National Forest trails carry the season, and lodging is far cheaper. Some village businesses run limited hours between seasons.
How does it compare with nearby Bromley or Mount Snow?
Bromley, near Peru, is smaller, sunnier and cheaper, and good for a family learning day. Mount Snow, further south near Wilmington, is closer to the Massachusetts and Connecticut drive and busier at weekends. Stratton sits between them on size and above both on polish and price.
