Where to stay in Shelburne
Almost everything here lines up along US-7, and where you land on that strip matters: the northern end, closer to the Burlington line, is the shortest hop to the city and about ten minutes from the airport, while the stretch through the village centre puts you walking distance from the museum entrance. Go west off the highway, down Harbor Road and Bay Road towards Shelburne Bay and the lakeshore, and it gets immediately quieter and more rural, at the cost of driving to every meal. Most people use Shelburne as an overflow base when Burlington is full on summer and foliage weekends, and it works well for that, but plan on the car for everything, including the two miles between the Museum and the Farms.

- Give Shelburne Museum a full dayThirty-nine buildings spread over forty-five acres hold Electra Havemeyer Webb’s collection of quilts, folk art, carriages and Impressionist paintings, alongside a relocated covered bridge, a lighthouse and the steamboat Ticonderoga, dragged overland from the lake. The main season runs roughly May through late October.

Shelburne strings along US-7 seven miles south of Burlington, fifteen minutes from downtown and about ten from Burlington International (BTV). Green Mountain Transit runs buses up and down Shelburne Road, but the museum, the farm and the lakeshore are spread out enough that a car makes the visit far easier.

What is the difference between Shelburne Museum and Shelburne Farms?
They are two separate places about two miles apart with separate tickets, often confused. The Museum is a campus of collected buildings and Americana; the Farms is a working farm and conservation estate on the lakeshore with trails, animals and a cheese operation.
Is Shelburne a good base for Burlington?
Yes. It is seven miles south on US-7, about fifteen minutes to downtown Burlington and ten to the airport. It is quieter than the city and often has availability on weekends when Burlington fills, but you will be driving everywhere.
Is the museum open in winter?
The main campus operates as a seasonal open-air museum from late spring into late October, when most of the historic buildings are staffed and unlocked. There is limited winter programming in the year-round gallery building, so check before planning a January visit around it.
Is there enough here for children?
Plenty. The Teddy Bear factory tour, the animals and Farm Barn at Shelburne Farms, and the museum’s carousel and circus buildings all land well with kids. Add the beach at Shelburne Bay in summer and you have two easy days.
