Where is the best base in Rutland County?
Rutland city for price, supermarkets and services, twenty minutes from the mountain. Killington itself for ski-in convenience and nightlife at a premium. Brandon, Castleton or Poultney if you want a quiet village and are happy to drive.
How do I get here without driving the whole way?
Amtrak's Ethan Allen Express calls at Rutland and Castleton with daily service from New York and Albany. Rutland-Southern Vermont Regional Airport has limited commuter flights, while Albany is about an hour and forty-five minutes and Burlington around an hour and a half.
Is Killington expensive?
Walk-up lift tickets are at the top of the market, so buy ahead online or come on a multi-resort season pass. Staying in Rutland rather than on the access road is the single biggest saving, usually at the cost of a twenty-five minute drive each way.
What is there outside ski season?
Killington runs a lift-served bike park and gondola through the summer, and the county has Green Mountain National Forest trailheads, the lakes around Castleton, and quiet back roads for cycling. Foliage on US-4 and VT-100 peaks from late September into mid-October.
