3-star hotels in Woodstock
A shortlist of the 3-star hotels in Woodstock, Vermont, with addresses on or up the hill from the Village Green and out along the West Woodstock and South Woodstock roads. Built for couples, families and leaf-peepers who want the village on foot and a car for everything beyond it.
Staying in Woodstock
Woodstock is the most photographed village in Vermont, its streets kept free of overhead wires, neon and big-box retail by four generations of conservationists and, most famously, by Laurance S. and Mary French Rockefeller. They funded the restoration, set up Vermont's only National Historical Park and protected the surrounding hill country, so the place still reads as a 19th-century town: an oval Village Green anchored by the Woodstock Inn & Resort, Federal and Greek Revival brick houses, covered timber bridges and working Jersey dairy farms on the slopes around it.
These 3-star hotels sit in two pockets. Charleston House, The Shire Woodstock, Stay At Jimmy's and Ardmore Inn all have addresses on Pleasant Street, one block off the Green; The Blue Horse Inn is on Church Street, also in the village. The rest are spread out along the West Woodstock Road and South Road toward Taftsville and the Kedron Valley, a mile or two from the centre. The Pleasant Street and Church Street group suits couples and short-break visitors who want dinner, the Norman Williams library and the Mount Tom trailheads without moving the car; the outlying inns, with their gardens, river frontage and family rooms, suit families and anyone who prefers quiet and farm views.

Plan your stay
Getting there and around
Woodstock sits on US-4 in the Ottauquechee Valley, about 20 minutes west of I-91 and I-89 at White River Junction. The nearest airports are Lebanon, New Hampshire for regional flights, and Burlington International (BTV) roughly two hours away; Boston and Manchester are also common arrival points. The Amtrak Vermonter stops at White River Junction, from where you will need a taxi or a rental car. A car is essential for anything beyond the village itself. You can spend a whole weekend on foot inside the village — green, shops, restaurants, the national park and the Mount Tom trails all start within walking distance — but the covered bridges, the outlying farms and Quechee Gorge all need wheels.
When to go
Central Vermont at Woodstock's elevation usually peaks in the first half of October, with the hills above the village turning a week or so before the valley floor. Reserve rooms for October months ahead, and expect US-4 and the back roads to be slow with leaf traffic at weekends. Winter is arguably the prettiest season, with snow on the greens and no leaf-season crush: cross-country trails, the small ski hill at Saskadena Six and easy access to Killington fill the days, though a few seasonal shops and farm attractions run reduced hours. Site notes the week between Christmas and New Year is one of the busiest.
