Church Street Marketplace with brick buildings and Lake Champlain in the distance from $227
Burlington LAKESIDE CITY

Vermont's biggest town, pinned between Lake Champlain and the University of Vermont — walkable, opinionated, and never quite as urban as it thinks.

Stowe village church steeple with Mount Mansfield in the background from $97
Stowe CLASSIC SKI TOWN

The postcard Vermont ski town — Mount Mansfield looming over a white church steeple, and prices to match the view.

Gold-domed Vermont State House rising above trees in downtown Montpelier from $189
Montpelier STATE CAPITAL

The smallest state capital in America — 8,000 people, a gold-domed statehouse, and one main street you’ll walk in ten minutes.

Woodstock village green with white clapboard houses and elm trees from $210
Woodstock PRESERVED VILLAGE

The most photographed village in Vermont — Rockefeller money kept it perfect, and the room rates reflect that.

Marble sidewalks and colonial storefronts along Main Street in Manchester Village from $175
Manchester OUTLET & FLY-FISHING

Split personality town — colonial Manchester Village with marble sidewalks up the hill, outlet shopping on Route 7 below.

Killington ski trails cutting down forested mountain slopes from $165
Killington BIG MOUNTAIN SKI

The Beast of the East — Vermont's biggest ski resort with a raucous access-road scene, and not much else off-season.

Middlebury College campus buildings with Adirondack Mountains in distance from $155
Middlebury COLLEGE TOWN

College town with a proper waterfall right downtown and enough independent restaurants to justify the detour.

Downtown Brattleboro buildings along Main Street sloping down to the Connecticut River from $145
Brattleboro ARTSY RIVER TOWN

Southern Vermont's counterculture holdout — bookstores, art co-ops, a farmers market that's a scene, and the Connecticut River at the bottom of Main Street.

Rutland's downtown Center Street with historic brick storefronts from $115
Rutland WORKING CITY

Vermont's second-largest city — not pretty, honestly cheap, and the practical base for Killington skiers who don’t want resort prices.

Covered bridge over the Mad River in Waitsfield with farmland beyond from $165
Waitsfield MAD RIVER VALLEY

The lower half of the Mad River Valley — a covered bridge, a working farm scene, and the last village before Sugarbush ski country.

Warren village store and covered bridge over the Mad River from $175
Warren SUGARBUSH VILLAGE

Tiny village at the south end of the Mad River Valley — Warren Store, a covered bridge, and Sugarbush a mile up the mountain road.

Downtown Waterbury railroad depot and brick buildings on Main Street from $145
Waterbury BREWERY HUB

The unlikely food and beer capital of Vermont — Ben & Jerry's, Alchemist, and enough breweries to plan a whole weekend.

Historic buildings and covered bridge on the grounds of Shelburne Museum from $259
Shelburne MUSEUM TOWN

Just south of Burlington — home to Shelburne Museum's 39-building campus and the Vanderbilt-era Shelburne Farms on Lake Champlain.

Stratton Mountain village clock tower with ski slopes rising behind from $185
Stratton RESORT MOUNTAIN

Purpose-built mountain resort with a pedestrian village at the base — polished, family-focused, and priced for the New York crowd it draws.

Downtown Ludlow with Okemo mountain rising behind Main Street from $155
Ludlow OKEMO TOWN

Old mill town at the base of Okemo Mountain — more of a real town than most ski destinations, cheaper than its neighbors, and rebuilding after 2023's floods.

Bennington Battle Monument obelisk rising above surrounding trees from $125
Bennington HISTORIC CORNER

The historic southwestern corner of Vermont — Battle Monument, Robert Frost's grave, Bennington College, and cheap rooms.

St. Johnsbury Athenaeum brick facade on Main Street from $115
St. Johnsbury NORTHEAST KINGDOM

The gateway to the Northeast Kingdom — a 19th-century Fairbanks Scale fortune left the town a museum, an athenaeum, and a genuinely eccentric downtown.

Jay Peak's aerial tramway and snowy ski slopes near the Canadian border from $175
Jay Peak FAR NORTH MOUNTAIN

Vermont's snowiest ski resort, 5 miles from Quebec — legendary powder, an indoor waterpark, and complicated recent history.

Smugglers' Notch resort village with three ski peaks rising behind from $165
Smugglers' Notch FAMILY SKI RESORT

Family-focused ski resort on the north side of Mount Mansfield — connected to Stowe in winter, isolated by a closed road in summer.

Quechee Gorge deep chasm with the Ottauquechee River flowing at the bottom from $175
Quechee GORGE VILLAGE

Small village 15 minutes from Woodstock — home to Vermont's deepest gorge and the Simon Pearce glassworks in an old woolen mill.

White clapboard houses along Grafton's Main Street with a covered bridge nearby from $195
Grafton PRESERVED VILLAGE

Tiny, meticulously restored 19th-century village — Windham Foundation preserved it, Grafton Village Cheese still makes cheese there, and there are more cows than people.

Lake Willoughby fjord-like waters between the cliffs of Mount Pisgah and Mount Hor from $145
Lake Willoughby GLACIAL LAKE

A five-mile-long glacial lake wedged between two cliff-faced mountains in the Northeast Kingdom — closest thing to a fjord east of the Rockies.

Cheap hotels in Vermont: how this site works

Hotels-vermont.com is a curated guide to the whole state, not just Burlington. We cover the Champlain Valley (Burlington, Shelburne, Vergennes), the Green Mountains (Stowe, Waterbury, Warren and the Mad River Valley), the Northeast Kingdom (St. Johnsbury, Jay Peak, Newport), central Vermont around Woodstock and Killington, southern Vermont (Manchester, Bennington, Brattleboro) and the ski corridor from Stratton to Mount Snow. Each area page explains who it suits, real price bands and how to get there without renting the wrong kind of car.

We are not the booking engine. When you tap See price, you are handed to app.impt.io, which aggregates over 8 million hotels worldwide at the same price or better than booking direct with the hotel. The difference: every confirmed booking through that link funds one verified tonne of carbon removal, at no extra cost to you. Same Hampton Inn in South Burlington, same Trapp Family Lodge room in Stowe, same price, one tonne of CO2 removed.

Where to stay in Vermont: neighbourhoods and towns

Burlington is the obvious base for a first visit: Church Street Marketplace for dinner, the Lake Champlain waterfront for sunset, and easy day trips to Shelburne Museum and the Ben and Jerry factory in Waterbury. Stowe is where serious hikers and skiers head, with Mount Mansfield (Vermont highest peak at 4,393 feet) and the Stowe Recreation Path linking the village to Mountain Road. Woodstock and neighbouring Quechee are the classic covered-bridge Vermont, expensive but genuinely beautiful.

For lower prices, look at Rutland, St. Johnsbury, Brattleboro and White River Junction. Rutland puts you 20 minutes from Killington skiing at half the slopeside price. Brattleboro in the south suits anyone driving up from Boston or New York and wanting a working arts town with breweries like Hermit Thrush. The Northeast Kingdom (Jay, Newport, Craftsbury) is remote, cheap and empty, ideal if you want lakes, moose and no crowds.

What Vermont hotels actually cost

In Burlington, expect $130-180 for a midweek room at Hotel Vermont or the Courtyard Marriott waterfront in shoulder season, climbing to $260-340 during UVM graduation, foliage and Fourth of July. Stowe averages $180-250 off-peak at places like the Green Mountain Inn, and $400-700 in peak ski or leaf season. Woodstock is the priciest small town in the state: the Woodstock Inn runs $350 in April and over $900 during foliage weekends.

Budget travellers do best in Rutland ($75-110 at chain motels on Route 7), St. Johnsbury ($80-120 near I-91) and Brattleboro ($95-135 at the Latchis Hotel on Main Street). Ski-country condos in Killington and Ludlow are often cheaper per person than hotels if you fill four beds: expect $220-320 for a two-bedroom off-peak on Killington Access Road, doubling on holiday weeks like Presidents Day.

Getting around Vermont and when to go

A car is close to essential. Burlington International (BTV) is the main airport, with rentals from around $55/day off-season. I-89 runs northwest to southeast connecting Burlington, Waterbury, Montpelier and White River Junction; I-91 runs the eastern spine through Brattleboro, White River Junction, St. Johnsbury and up to the Canadian border at Derby Line. Amtrak Vermonter serves Brattleboro, Montpelier and Essex Junction once daily; the Ethan Allen Express runs from New York to Rutland in about 5.5 hours.

Go in late September through October 10 for foliage if budget is no object; go in June for warm days, empty inns and Lake Champlain swimming; go in January and February for reliable snow at Stowe, Sugarbush and Jay Peak (Jay averages 359 inches a year). Avoid April mud season only if you dislike closed dirt roads: hotel rates then are the lowest of the year and maple sugarhouses in Franklin County are still boiling sap through the first week.

Questions, answered

Off-peak (April, early November), budget motels in Rutland and St. Johnsbury run $70-95 per night. Chain properties like Motel 6 Rutland and Days Inn St. Johnsbury regularly list under $85. Burlington drops to around $110-130 midweek in mud season. Expect to pay double these numbers during foliage week in early October or on holiday weekends at ski resorts.
