Kimpton Taconic ($300-$500) is pet-friendly and modern. Barnstead Innstead is the boutique B&B. For value, the Palmer House Resort ($150-$260) or Weathervane Motel ($120-$200) do the job.
What to do
Hildene, Robert Todd Lincoln’s estate ($25), is legitimately excellent — house, gardens, sheep, cheese-making, and hiking. Manchester Designer Outlets have real Kate Spade, Vineyard Vines, and 40+ others. Northshire Bookstore is a national-treasure independent bookshop. For food: Chop House at Equinox, Silver Fork, Depot 62 (Turkish!), and Mulligans for a beer. Skiing at Bromley (15 min) and Stratton (25 min).
