Middlebury sits on US-7 halfway between Burlington and Rutland, about 45 minutes south of Burlington International (BTV). Amtrak's Ethan Allen Express stops in town, with one train a day each way linking Burlington, Vergennes, Rutland, Albany and New York. VT-125 climbs east over Middlebury Gap to VT-100, and VT-22A runs the flat western route. A car is the practical way to see anything outside the village, but not for the town itself, which is compact and easy on foot. You do need one for the Snow Bowl, Ripton, Lake Dunmore and the Champlain Valley farms, none of which have useful public transport.
When to go
Rooms are scarce around graduation in late May and during the Bread Loaf conference in August, so lock those dates in early.
